AUPE salutes Alberta’s nurses during Nurses Week
EDMONTON — As the bargaining representative for thousands of
front-line nursing care employees, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees
salutes all Alberta nurses during Nurses Week, May 10-16, 2004.
“Front-line nursing care workers are among the keys to the success
of Alberta’s health care system,” said AUPE President Dan
MacLennan. “They play a huge role in keeping the system running
and making it the effective and fair system that we are all so proud
of.
“All front-line nurses deserve our support and our recognition,”
MacLennan stated.
AUPE represents more than 10,000 front-line nursing care employees throughout
Alberta, many of whom play a leading role in making AUPE Alberta’s
largest union, MacLennan said. “These workers have accounted for
more than 90 per cent of the growth in our union over the past five
years.”
Among AUPE’s members are licensed practical nurses, nursing aides,
registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, operating room technicians,
therapy aides, recreation aides and many others.
AUPE represents all direct auxiliary nursing care employees of all nine
Alberta health regions. In addition, AUPE represents nurses employed
by private long-term care facilities, both for-profit and not-for-profit,
in community health and directly employed by the provincial government.
“We are very proud to be the representative of this important
and hardworking group of Albertans,” MacLennan said. “AUPE
will continue to fight hard for recognition and fair compensation for
these vital health sector workers.
“AUPE is encouraging our members to celebrate Nurses Week by taking
part in activities and celebrations in their regions and at their worksites,”
MacLennan concluded.
