Direct government employees represented by AUPE ratify wage-reopener
agreement
EDMONTON — Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees
directly employed by the Government of Alberta have ratified the province’s
3.5-per-cent pay increase offer for the final year of their current
contract.
The salary increase is retroactive to Sept. 1, 2003.
In mail-in ballots counted today, members of each of the nine AUPE locals
representing direct employees of the provincial government voted to
ratify the agreement.
All members of AUPE Locals 001 to 012 had the opportunity to vote for
or against the 2004 wage offer from the province. Negotiators for AUPE
and the province agreed on Feb. 10 to put the employer offer to a vote
of the membership. The union did not recommend either acceptance or
rejection of the offer.
Ballots were mailed to approximately 19,000 members in the sector during
the week of Feb. 23.
The percentage of AUPE members who returned ballots — more than
62 per cent — was unusually high for a mail-in ratification vote,
said AUPE Staff Negotiator Jim Petrie.
“This brings to an end the process of negotiating the 2004 wage
reopener,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. “However,
we will soon be heading right back into bargaining for a new Master
Agreement and subsidiary agreements for each of the nine government
service locals.
“The General Service Bargaining Committee will be holding a bargaining
conference in June to prepare for this next round of negotiations for
the full contract,” he said.
The current agreement, signed in November 2001, expires on Aug. 31,
2004, said Petrie, who led the General Service Bargaining Committee,
which bargained on behalf of the AUPE members.
In a wage-reopener, the union and employer agree to negotiate wages
for the last year of a collective agreement, leaving all other provisions
of the contract in place.
