AUPE members, M.D. of Mackenzie ratify new collective agreement
FORT VERMILION Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees
and the council of the Municipal District of Mackenzie No. 23 have both
ratified a new three-year collective agreement under which employees
will see their pay increase by more than nine per cent.
The M.D.s council and management have a history of working
with AUPE in a positive and co-operative manner, said AUPE Union
Representative Brian Randall, who led the AUPE bargaining committee.
This contract continues that very successful relationship.
Under the terms of the agreement, members will receive a three-per-cent
pay increase on Jan. 1, 2004, another three per cent on Jan. 1, 2005,
and another three per cent on Jan. 1, 2006, Randall said. In addition,
all full-time, part-time and temporary employees will receive a $500
signing bonus.
In addition to the bonus and pay increases, the agreement includes:
- Benefits for temporary employees.
- Improvement in contract language pertaining to no discrimination,
callbacks and annual vacations.
- An agreement by the employer to try to accommodate employees returning
to work, including forms of modified work.
- Shift differential and weekend premiums for bylaw officers.
- Agreement to purge personnel files of disciplinary letters after
24 months.
- Agreement by the employer to pay the total cost of Alberta Health
Care, dental and vision coverage, plus 50 per cent of long- and short-term
disability.
- An increase in employees boot allowance to $110 from $90.
- Insurance on mechanics tools to be covered by the employer.
The agreement was ratified by members of AUPE Local 118/008 on Jan.
14. The agreement was ratified by the municipal council on Jan. 13.
About 40 AUPE members are employed by the M.D. of Mackenzie. That number
rises to about 65 in the summer months.
The municipal district encompasses a large area of Albertas northwest
and includes the communities of Fort Vermilion, High Level, LaCrete,
Rainbow Lake and Zama City.
