AUPE information picket to highlight impasse in bargaining with SAIT
CALGARY Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Dan MacLennan
will meet union members at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
today to discuss appropriate responses to the impasse in contract negotiations
with the post-secondary institution.
The important general membership meetings are scheduled to take place
at noon and 2 p.m. in the Orpheus Theatre in SAITs Campus Centre.
MacLennan will be available for media interviews on the state of bargaining
with SAIT before and after the meetings with members.
On Wednesday at noon, SAIT support employees will take part in an information
picket on 16th Avenue N.W. immediately north of the campus to increase
public awareness of the impasse in negotiations.
AUPE local 039 represents approximately 600 support staff employees
of the Calgary institution. AUPE and SAIT management are far apart on
several important issues in the current round of bargaining.
This employer has taken a very regressive, extremely unreasonable
position, MacLennan said. The employers present offer
contains rollbacks for some employees and inadequate wage increases
for the rest.
AUPE Union Representative Ray Domeij, who leads the union bargaining
committee, said key issues include the attempt by the employer to roll
back the wages of food services workers to barely above minimum wage,
and to slash benefits paid to employees whose jobs are eliminated.
The employer is offering wage rates significantly below industry standards,
Domeij added.
