County of Strathcona members ratify two-year agreement

SHERWOOD PARK - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by the County of Strathcona have overwhelmingly ratified a new two-year agreement that includes a pay increase of eight per cent over the life of the agreement.

Members of AUPE Local 118/009 cast their ballots Dec. 10 at the county’s services facility in Sherwood Park, east of Edmonton. Strathcona County Council ratified the agreement at their regular meeting Dec. 14.

“ This group joined our union in May 1998 and they’ve been a strong addition because they’ve had strong support from their membership during each round of bargaining,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan after the ratification votes were counted.

The approximately 150 members of the local will receive wage increases of three per cent on Jan. 1, 2005, one per cent on July 1, 2005, three per cent on Jan. 1, 2006, and one per cent on July 1, 2006, said AUPE Staff Negotiator Wayne Trimble.

Trimble, who led the union bargaining team, said the agreement acknowledges the quality work Local 118/009 members do for the County of Strathcona.

“ Our members were quite satisfied with this pay increase over a two-year period,” Trimble said. “We see this as a solid agreement, which was reached as a result of healthy co-operation between both sides.”

Local 118/09 Chapter Chair, Brad Strachan said progress must still be made in wage increases for members whose positions are on the low end of the wage scale.
“ When you’re working with percentages, people who work at the lower end of the scale will see less of an increase then those who work at the top end of the scale,” Strachan said. “So, when the contract expires in 2006, I would like to see increases to the bottom of the scale.”
AUPE represents about 150 municipal outdoor workers, mechanics, electricians, water, wastewater and others employed by the county in Sherwood Park and surrounding areas.
