AUPE members and Norquest College ratify two-year agreement

EDMONTON — Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and administrators at NorQuest College have ratified a new two-year collective agreement under which employees will see pay increases of more than eight per cent over the life of the contract.

Under the agreement, which was based on the recommendation of a provincially appointed mediator, the approximately 220 members of AUPE Local 071/010 will have a pay increase of four per cent on July 1, 2005, and another four-per-cent increase on July 1, 2006, said AUPE Staff Negotiator Steve Nimchuk.

AUPE members who work with inmates and young offenders in some programs run by the Edmonton vocational institute will now be paid the same correctional institution allowance paid Correctional employees who work directly for the provincial government, Nimchuk said.

In addition, he noted, NorQuest instructional assistants in clinical practice programs in health care institutions will be paid shift differential of $1.80 per hour and weekend differential of the same rate under the agreement.

The deal also partly resolves a dispute over the treatment of a group of “term employees,” some of whom had worked for NorQuest many years but who did not receive full benefits.

“ I really believe the large information picket, with more than 500 participants, that we held at the college on Oct. 15, played a key role in the progress we have made so far on this issue,” Nimchuk said.

NorQuest has moved 16 long-time term employees to permanent status, with full benefits, and agreed in a letter to proceed with a review of the status of all term employees during the course of the next academic year, he said.

“Academic staff and excluded staff have benefited from our action too, because a number of them have been converted to permanent employment status too,” Nimchuk said.
