Former Edmonton Journal, Edmonton Sun journalist joins AUPE Communications Section

EDMONTON — After 16 years in print journalism, writer and editor Scott Pattison has joined AUPE’s Communications Section.

Pattison, who has held senior writing and editing positions on several newspapers in Western Canada, will assist with the writing and preparation of AUPE member publications such as Direct Impact, Steward Notes and www.aupe.org, the union’s Web site, said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

“We are extremely pleased to have a journalist of Scott Pattison’s calibre and experience join the union’s Communications Section,” MacLennan said.

“I look forward to seeing more in-depth feature writing in our publications for members and an improvement in the ability of the section to produce the variety and volume of materials required by AUPE’s growing membership,” said AUPE Communications Director David Climenhaga.

Before joining AUPE, Pattison worked as a copy editor for the Edmonton Journal. His journalism career includes stints with publications owned by CanWest, which publishes the Journal; Sun Media, which publishes the Edmonton Sun; Thomson Newspapers; and Horizon Publications.

Pattison also taught journalism at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton and worked briefly as a member of the electronic media for CBC Radio.

Pattison has captured 13 (individual and team) writing, layout and design awards, including the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Investigative Award and Thomson Newspapers’ North American Best Series Award.
Pattison has also been an active member, steward and bargaining committee representative of several unions, including the Canadian Auto Workers, United Steelworkers of America and the Communications Energy and Paperworkers.

He holds a Bachelors Degree in Communications from the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ont.

“Scott knows and understands the union movement, as well as having a solid background in communications,” Climenhaga said. “I expect his contribution to AUPE’s communication programs to be very valuable.”

Pattison can be contacted at 780-930-3406 in Edmonton or by calling AUPE’s toll-free number, 1-800-232-7284 and pressing 1. He may be contacted by e-mail at s.pattison@aupe.org.
