AUPE president in Grande Prairie to meet members during ballot count

GRANDE PRAIRIE – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Dan MacLennan will be in Grande Prairie tomorrow to meet union members at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital during a ratification vote by support services workers at 17 hospitals.

MacLennan will be at the Queen Elizabeth II and Mackenzie Place worksites during voting by more than 300 Grande Prairie support workers and as the ballots are counted Thursday evening.

MacLennan will be available to Grande Prairie media for interviews throughout the day. Journalists interested in setting up an interview are welcome to call MacLennan on his cellular phone – 780-910-8392.

In April, the AUPE Local 056 bargaining team representing approximately 900 support workers at the 17 hospitals unanimously rejected as unfair a mediator’s report recommending a settlement for the same workers.

Discussions among the employers, AUPE and the mediator ensued, resulting in the improved report being put forward by the mediator. The bargaining committee unanimously recommended ratification of a second mediator’s report.

Brian Randall, the AUPE Staff Negotiator who led the bargaining committee for Local 056, said the terms of settlement recommended in the second mediator’s report will put AUPE in a very strong position in the vote for which union will represent them required by Bill 27, the health-sector labour relations restructuring law passed in March.

Combined with the stronger language in many clauses in AUPE’s agreement, he said, "the result is a clearly superior contract to those of other unions in this region and elsewhere in the province."

AUPE Local 056 represents general support employees at hospitals in Bashaw, Boyle, Daysland, Drayton Valley, Grande Prairie, Grimshaw, Islay, Killam, Lacombe, Lamont, Mayerthorpe, McLennan, Provost, Radway, Redwater, Swan Hills, and Vermilion.

AUPE is Alberta’s largest union, with approximately 53,000 members province wide.
