AUPE rural hospital support bargaining team recommends ratification of deal

EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees Local 056 bargaining committee, representing approximately 900 support workers at 17 rural hospitals, has unanimously recommended ratification of a second mediator’s report proposing a settlement for the group.

Earlier this month, AUPE rejected as unfair a mediator’s report recommending a settlement for the same workers. Discussions among the employers, AUPE and the mediator ensued, resulting in the improved recommendation being put forward by the mediator.

"Our ability to encourage the mediator to recommend a fair deal in what could have been very difficult circumstances demonstrates the strength of AUPE," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. "The bargaining committee unanimously rejected the first recommendation outright."

Brian Randall, the AUPE Staff Negotiator who leads the bargaining committee for Local 056, said the mediator’s report means "on all rates of pay a level playing field now exists between AUPE and other unions representing employees in the same health regions.

"When this is combined with the stronger language in many clauses in AUPE’s agreement, the result is a clearly superior contract to those of other unions in the region," Randall said.

The two-year agreement recommended by the mediator would give employees pay increases of four per cent in the first year and 3.75 per cent in the second, Randall said. In addition, changes to some job classifications will result in more substantial increases for specific groups of employees.

Ratification votes are scheduled to take place in all work sites on May 15, Randall noted.

AUPE Local 056 represents general support employees at hospitals in Bashaw, Boyle, Daysland, Drayton Valley, Grande Prairie, Grimshaw, Islay, Killam, Lacombe, Lamont, Mayerthorpe, McLennan, Provost, Radway, Redwater, Swan Hills, and Vermilion.
