AUPE Executive Secretary-Treasurer Ed Mardell appointed to pension board

EDMONTON – AUPE Executive Secretary-Treasurer Ed Mardell has been appointed to the board of the Alberta Public Service Pension Plan.

Mardell was appointed by an order in council of the Alberta government on Feb. 12, 2003. His appointment runs until Dec. 31, 2006.

"I’m looking forward with enthusiasm to playing an active role on this board, which is so important to AUPE members," Mardell said. "I think this is going to be a real challenge."

Mardell has a long record of service to the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

He began his union involvement as an AUPE Union Steward in Local 008. Over the next 26 years, Mardell has progressed through almost every position within the Chapter and Local, eventually to Vice-President and then Executive Secretary-Treasurer.

Now in his fifth two-year term as Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Mardell is responsible for conducting the financial affairs of AUPE.

"Ed’s role on the board of the Public Service Pension Plan is important for AUPE, and an important complement to his role as AUPE’s chief financial officer," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

Mardell, whose home remains in Lac la Biche in northeastern Alberta, was most recently re-elected at AUPE’s 26th Annual Convention in October 2002.

Two other members of the PSPP Board have strong AUPE connections. Len Pederson, Chair of the board, is a member of AUPE Local 002. Ian Tarr, who recently retired from his job in Local 005, will continue on the board until the end of his term.

AUPE Union representative Carl Soderstrom holds AUPE’s position on the board of the Local Authorities Pension Plan.
