AUPE plans information picket at Fort McMurray’s Northern Lights Regional Health Centre

What: Information picket by AUPE members.
Why: To express concerns about the need for a northern allowance for health workers.
When: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursday, March 5.
Where: Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, 7 Hospital Street, Fort McMurray.

FORT McMURRAY – Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees will take part in an information picket Thursday at Fort McMurray’s hospital to express their concern about the need for their northern allowance to be restored.

Despite the high cost of living in their northern community, AUPE health care workers in Fort McMurray lost their northern living allowance more than a year ago.

"Our union and membership knows that the cost of living in Fort McMurray, especially in areas such as housing, is something that clearly makes Fort McMurray an exceptional situation compared to elsewhere in Alberta," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan, who will attend the information picket.

"The health region needs to restore the allowance for these employees as long as the cost of living in Fort McMurray is significantly higher than elsewhere in Alberta," MacLennan said.

The information picket will take place outside the main entrance of the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, 7 Hospital Street, Fort McMurray, between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.

MacLennan will also be attending an AUPE joint annual general meeting in Fort McMurray that day, and will be available for media interviews on the northern allowance issue, the government’s plans to transfer mental health service to health regions, and on plans by the government to legislate functional bargaining units in health care.

Media interested in an interview should contact MacLennan on his cellular phone – 780-910-8392.
