AUPE will fight Labour Board decision to give members information
to CUPE telemarketers
EDMONTON The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees will formally
object tomorrow to a decision of the Alberta Labour Relations Board
that could result in health region employees being harassed at home
by telemarketers from an Ottawa-based union.
The Labour Relations Board informed AUPE and other unions Thursday that
it had agreed to give the Canadian Union of Public Employees the names
of general support services employees of Alberta health regions who
have returned their ballots in the Bill 27 runoff votes.
This will allow CUPE to determine the names of eligible employees who
have not yet voted.
The Labour Relations Board made the decision in response to a request
by CUPE without consulting other unions involved in the votes.
AUPE President Dan MacLennan said AUPE believes the release of the information
is an invasion of the privacy of health region employees, who have their
own reasons for not voting or not participating yet in the runoff votes.
In addition, MacLennan said, AUPE believes that the release of the information
to CUPE is an abuse of due process and an abuse of the electoral process.
We will file an objection Monday, and we will request that personal
information about who has voted not be handed out to anyone until the
matter is properly considered in a formal Labour Board hearing,
MacLennan said.
If this decision is allowed to go ahead, we think CUPE telemarketers
may again call these employees at their homes, MacLennan added.
AUPE has received complaints from members who feel they have been
harassed at home by CUPE telemarketers and do not want any more information
of this type released.
Under Bill 27, legislation passed in March that restructures labour
relations in Albertas nine health regions, runoff votes are required
in several regions to determine which union will represent employees
in the new bargaining units.
Copies of the ALRBs decision and CUPEs request are available
upon request.
