Alberta Research Council employees ratify two-year agreement

EDMONTON – Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by the Alberta Research Council have ratified a new two-year collective agreement that includes pay increases of 3.5 per cent in each year of the contract.

The approximately 275 ARC employees, members of AUPE local 060, work at research centers in Edmonton, Calgary, Devon and Vegreville.

In addition to the total compound pay increases of more than seven per cent over the life of the agreement, the contract includes provision for a lump-sum payment of $600 to all employees upon signing, said AUPE Staff negotiator Malcolm McNaughton. Employees will receive retroactive pay increases to April 1, 2003.

The agreement also includes provision to create a “wellness account,” into which employees may roll unused vacation days, said McNaughton, who led the union bargaining committee.

In addition, the agreement includes an innovative casual leave provision that allows employees to take up to 15 days of casual leave in addition to their regular vacation time, McNaughton said.

“This is a positive agreement with some trend setting articles,” McNaughton said. “The agreement will give Alberta Research Council employees some stability over the next two years in the face of funding cuts by the province.”
