AUPE members ratify mediator’s recommended settlement with City of Spruce Grove

SPRUCE GROVE – Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by the City of Spruce Grove late Tuesday ratified a mediator’s recommended terms of settlement.

If the proposed three-year collective agreement is also ratified by the Spruce Grove City Council next week, the danger of a strike by the city’s street maintenance, water and recreation employees will have been averted.
"This is a reasonable and fair agreement for this particular group of 25 workers, and well within the means of the City of Spruce Grove," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

The settlement recommended by the provincially appointed mediator would give the employees pay increases of four per cent in the first year and 3.5 per cent in each subsequent year of a contract that would run from Jan. 1, 2002, to Dec. 31, 2004.

The deal recommended by the mediator and ratified by the AUPE members also contains improvements shift differential pay, leaves of absence and sick leave, as well as job-security and severance provisions.
The Local 118/001 members’ contract expired more than a year ago. They endorsed the use of strike action if necessary to achieve a fair contract on Nov. 12, 2002.

AUPE Staff Negotiator Steve Nimchuk said he is hopeful Spruce Grove City Council will ratify the deal at its next regular meeting on Feb. 24.

"The city agreed to participate in the mediation process, as did we," Nimchuk said. "The mediator has recommended a compromise settlement that our members have voted to accept even though it does not contain all that they hoped for in this round of bargaining.

"We expect City Council members to take the same reasonable approach that our members did," he concluded. "Our members are anxious to get back to concentrating on their jobs serving the people of Spruce Grove."
