AUPE members to hold information picket tonight at Spruce Grove City hall

SPRUCE GROVE – Members of Local 118/001 of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees will hold a rally at 6:30 p.m. this evening at Spruce Grove City Hall to support their bargaining committee.

The 25 members of the AUPE local have been working without a collective agreement for more than a year. They endorsed the use of strike action if necessary at a membership meeting on Nov. 12, 2002.

If an agreement with the city can’t be reached during a mediation session Thursday, a strike is a virtual certainty, AUPE Union Representative Steve Nimchuk said today.

"The membership doesn’t want to take that action, but they will be forced to if the employer’s negotiating committee won’t bargain seriously," Nimchuk said. "It would be very sad if that happened, because we are now so close to an agreement that there is no reason for the employer to take the last, small step necessary to reach a deal."

Tonight’s demonstration, which will take place just before the regularly scheduled meeting of Spruce Grove City Council, will be attended by AUPE President Dan MacLennan.
