AUPE barbecue at University of Calgary a huge success

CALGARY – Hundreds of people turned out for an Alberta Union of Provincial Employees member appreciation barbecue at the University of Calgary yesterday.

Despite the threat of rain, more than 800 people came to the barbecue put on by AUPE Local 052, which represents non-academic employees of the university, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

“It was a fantastic turnout,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan, who was at the barbecue. “The council representatives and local members did an unbelievable job in organizing the event.”

A band, made up mainly of AUPE members, entertained the crowd as they ate veggie and 100 per cent Alberta beef burgers, in support of the Alberta beef industry. Door prizes were raffled off and $195 was raised for the Campus Food Bank in a 50/50 draw.

“People enjoyed the music, the food, and the atmosphere,” added MacLennan, who took a turn as barbecue chef. “It’s nice to see so many people from one of AUPE’s largest chapters having such a good time and building solidarity.”

The barbecue was moved indoors to MacEwan Hall, graciously provided free of charge by EduCatering, the U of C Students’ Union owned and operated catering service, when the skies threatened to open up.

Local 052 represents approximately 3,000 employees at the U of C.
