AUPE president available to comment on budget speech

EDMONTON – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Dan MacLennan will be available to media at the Legislature this afternoon to comment on the Alberta budget.

The government’s budget will be read by Finance Minister Pat Nelson starting at 3:30 p.m. and MacLennan can be contacted on his cellular phone after that time to comment on the details. MacLennan’s cellular phone number is 780-910-8392.

In response to media reports that the budget may contain tax cuts, MacLennan said this morning he hopes any tax changes come in the form of reductions to Alberta health care premiums.

"Tax cuts, much like the federal government’s increases to RSP ceilings, tend to benefit higher income groups more than middle-class taxpayers," MacLennan said. "A reduction in health care premiums would benefit the greatest number of people, including Albertans who need help the most and who might not benefit from other forms of reductions."

MacLennan also said he hopes the budget will include adequate funding for post-secondary institutions, government programs including boards and agencies, and health care.

AUPE is Alberta’s largest union, with approximately 53,000 members.
