Despite the snow, AUPE locals hold huge joint AGM in Red Deer

RED DEER – Despite a late blast of winter, approximately 400 Central Alberta members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees braved snow and wind Wednesday night to take part in a large joint annual general meeting of their union locals.

In all, 12 locals with a combined membership of nearly 4,000 people sent delegates to the joint AGM at the Red Deer Lodge.

"Once again, this joint meeting was a huge success that demonstrates the strength of our union in this region," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan, who attended the meeting and spoke to members.

Participants discussed the effects of Bill 27 on health care locals, and conducted important local business such as electing executive members.

Bill 27, a law passed by the Legislature on March 26, bans strike for many more health care workers, allows employers to break provisions of a collective agreement with employees of the Alberta Mental Health Board and massively restructures union locals in health regions.

AUPE held its first Central Alberta AGM, attended by about 300 participants, on a sunshiny evening last April.
"That AUPE members will come out in terrible weather like last night’s shows the importance of AUPE in their worksites," said Kathy Kadyk, a Membership Services Officer in AUPE’s Red Deer Regional Office.

"These meetings give members from throughout the region the opportunity to meet one another, compare notes and discover that they share many of the same problems even though their workplaces are very different," Kadyk said. "We plan to hold another joint AGM next spring."

Representatives of AUPE members who work in correctional services, government administration, social services, the Michener Centre, mental health services, front-line nursing, hospital support, gaming and liquor inspection, and ATB Financial branches, among others, were at the meeting.

AUPE is Alberta’s largest union, with more than 50,000 members throughout Alberta.
