AUPE members at Capital Region Housing ratify new contract

EDMONTON – Employees of Capital Region Housing Corp., members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, have ratified a new two year collective agreement that gives them pay increases of five per cent in the first year and four per cent in the second.

"This contract shows once again that even small groups of employees can secure significant benefits by being part of a union," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

In addition to the wage increases negotiated in the agreement, the approximately 30 members of AUPE Local 118/011 achieved significant gains in their rights set out in the contract and improvements in benefits, said Union Representative Lynn Gough.

"The members of this bargaining unit were very pleased with improvements in their contract, which will improve their working conditions considerably," Gough said.

Improvements in the new collective agreement include:

" One additional day of bereavement leave. " Increased acting incumbency pay to 80 cents per hour, from 40 cents per hour in the previous contract. Increases in acting pay for temporary employees.
" An increase in the overtime meal allowance to $15 from $5.
" An increase in the mileage rate to 33 cents per kilometer from 27 cents.
  • Improved contract language pertaining to job postings.
  • Increases in their benefits package with the addition of massage therapy and eye examinations.

The term of the contract runs from Jan. 1, 2002, to Dec. 31, 2003.
Capital Region Housing Corp. is responsible for the administration and operation of approximately 4,500 units of social housing in the Edmonton area.
