AUPE members at Carewest Maintenance ratify 10% pay increase in one-year deal

CALGARY – Maintenance workers at Carewest continuing care facilities throughout Calgary today ratified a one-year collective agreement giving them pay increases averaging 10 per cent, Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Dan MacLennan announced.

The 16 members of AUPE Local 2424/003 voted overwhelmingly to accept the new contract, which also contains improvements in shift and weekend differential pay, mileage rates, overtime pay, clothing and equipment allowances and annual leave.

"This shows once again how union membership is a tremendous benefit, even for very small groups of working people," MacLennan said.

AUPE Union Representative Karen Thibault, who negotiated the agreement with the Calgary continuing care provider, said the agreement brings the workers’ pay into line with people doing the same work at Edmonton’s Capital care group while preserving a pay grid that advances employees to the top rate more quickly.

Carewest operates nine continuing care facilities in the Calgary area.
