Staff at Good Samaritan facility in Edmonton vote to join AUPE

EDMONTON – Staff at another Good Samaritan facility have voted to join the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

With the vote this week by employees of the Good Samaritan Bungalow Group Home in Edmonton, AUPE now represents nearly 650 employees of the Good Samaritan Society in the Edmonton region.

"This vote shows that employees of small units recognize they can improve their jobs through union membership, especially when their new union represents much larger numbers of people working for the same employer," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

"AUPE remains committed to organizing workers employed elsewhere by the Good Samaritan Society, and to organizing people working without unions throughout Alberta," MacLennan said.

At present, AUPE represents approximately 170 employees in about 20 group homes run by the society in Edmonton. Those Good Sam employees are members of AUPE Local 058/018, who will be joined by the new members from the Bungalow Group Home.

The other AUPE members employed by the Good Samaritan Society work in continuing care at seven larger Good Sam facilities in the Edmonton area.
