AUPE locals to hold joint annual general meeting in Red Deer
RED DEER Thirteen Alberta Union of Provincial Employees locals
with a combined membership of more than 3,500 will hold their first-ever
joint annual general meeting in Red Deer this evening.
Approximately 300 local representatives plus AUPE elected officers and
staff are expected to be at the joint AGM, at which several important
items of union business are expected to be dealt with.
AUPE President Dan MacLennan and Vice-President Lynne Gingras will give
short remarks before the members get down to business.
Media representatives are welcome to attend.
Among the items on the agenda is the restructuring of AUPEs health
sector locals in the region.
"AUPE in the Central Alberta Region will have a slightly different
structure in its health care components after this meeting," MacLennan
explained.
"The process of restructuring our health sector is happening everywhere
in Alberta, including the Red Deer area," he said. "This will
further increase member participation and communication among various
similar groups.
"By holding a large meeting with many locals from throughout the
Red Deer region, AUPE has an opportunity to exchange ideas and build on
the strength and diversity of our union," MacLennan added. "Members
get to see the diversity and strength of our union right in the Red Deer
area."
Each of the locals represented at the meeting will break off to hold elections,
and the restructured health locals will elect their new executives, said
AUPE Membership Services Officer Kathy Kadyk.
"Well have dinner, and well hear some short traditional
speeches, but the key business of the night will be electing chapter officers
and doing union business," Kadyk said.
At the meeting will be representatives from the Central Alberta area of
government administration and support services, government administration
and program services, Alberta correctional services, trades and related
services, Alberta natural resources and conservation officers, Michener
Centre patient support and rehabilitation staff, government technical
and field services, Alberta Treasury Branch employees and health care
sector employees from the various hospitals and health centres in the
David Thompson Health Region.
The meeting gets under way at 6:30 p.m. at the North Hill Inn, 7150 Gaetz
Avenue in Red Deer.
AUPE has approximately 49,500 members throughout Alberta.
