Local 005 members' high-altitude rescue
The public often doesn’t realize the important and dangerous work done by members of AUPE in the course of their duties. These dramatic photos show one example: a risky high-altitude helicopter rescue of an injured hiker by Local 005 members Randy Axani and Randy Ramsden in Kananaskis Country west of Calgary on Sept. 25, 2004. The rescue took place near the summit of Mount Rae in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park when a hiker doing what is considered a difficult scramble slipped and tumbled about 20 metres, breaking several bones in his right ankle. These photos, provided by Axani, show the two Conservation Officers as they signal for the rescue helicopter, hook up the injured hiker in a heli-sling and take off with the aircraft to carry the man to safety. Axani and Ramsden both work for Alberta Community Development, Parks and Protected Areas in Kananaskis Country. AUPE is proud that its more than 62,000 members work hard to serve the public every day.
