Education Sector Kananaskis conference
Participants in AUPE’s 2005 Education Sector Conference gathered in Kananaskis May 8-10 to ponder “partnerships in our public system” and try to answer this question about them: “progress or problem?” About 100 AUPE members, members of other unions, faculty associations, student groups, union staff and guest speakers took part in this year’s conference. The event heard from speakers who ranged from Advanced Education Minister David Hancock to AFL-CIO Canadian Construction Trades Director Bill Blakely (who is both a plumber and a lawyer) to former CBC Broadcaster Don Hill, and from Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Education Project Director Erika Shaker to the Three Dead Trolls comedy troupe. Participants and organizers hailed the conference as a success. “Once again, we’ve put on a conference that contained a variety of points of view encouraged great discussion off the floor and provided quality information for delegates,” said Union Representative Steve Nimchuk, who organized the conference.
