150 protest on St. Patrick’s Day
Despite a chilly breeze, more than 150 members of AUPE Local 006 showed their displeasure with their heavy caseloads on St. Patrick’s Day at a noon-hour information picket outside Alberta Children’s Services’ offices in downtown Edmonton. The Alberta government social workers cheered AUPE President Dan MacLennan when he told them their demonstration "shows to the public and the media just how much you care about the kids." Participants called on the ministry to recognize that workloads are unmanageable and the support of senior officials is needed to resolve this situation. "The welfare of Alberta’s children and the health and morale of our staff are too important to allow this situation just to continue," said Local 006 Chair Maureen Braun.
