    Introduction to Your Union

    Registration: 8:45– 9:00
    Course Time: 9:00 – 4:30
    This one-day course provides basic information on AUPE, including its structure and democratic process. Also, addresses two questions: What can the union do for me and what is my responsibility to my union? Members should take this course to have an understanding of where they might want to get active within AUPE’s structure.

    Course Requirement(s)
    *This course is a must as it is a pre requisite to the Level 1 Union Steward Course. Chapter/Local must nominate members interested in taking the Union Steward Level 1 Course before registering for the course. It is strongly recommended that members take this course before taking any of AUPE’s courses. This course is open to all AUPE members

    Level 1 Union Steward Course (2 Day Course)

    Registration: 8:45– 9:00
    Course Time: Day 1 & 2 - 9:00 – 4:30
    This is a 2-day Introductory Union Steward Course. In this course participants will gain knowledge in areas such as: Roles and Responsibilities as Union Stewards; Knowing your Contract, a Systematic Approach to Contract Interpretation; What is Discipline; and Investigation and Disciplinary meetings.

    Course Requirement(s)
    *Must be nominated as a Union Steward by your Chapter/Local. Must have taken the Introduction to Your Union course.

    Level 2 Union Steward Course (2 Day Course)
    Registration: Day 1- 8:45 - 9:00
    Course Time: Day 1 & 2 - 9:00 - 4:30
    The Level 2 Union Steward Course is a 2 day course that allows Stewards to refine their skills in: Identifying Grievances versus Complaints; Writing and Presentation of Grievances; Investigation and Discipline; and understanding their role in the Duty of Fair Representation.

    Upon completion of this course, Level 2 Stewards are expected to attend disciplinary investigations and present grievances on behalf of members.

    Course Requirement(s)
    Must be a Level 1 Union Steward.
    *It is recommended that you have experience in handling disciplinary meetings and observing grievance hearings before taking the Level 2 Union Steward Course.

    Contract Interpretation
    Registration: 8:45– 9:00
    Course Time: 9:00 – 4:30
    This one-day course looks at rules of construction and interpretation of Collective Agreements. This course is not contract specific but reviews ways to interpret contract language.

    Course Requirement(s)
    *Must be a Level 1, 2 or 3 Union Steward.

    Union Officer Training (2 day course)

    Registration: Day 1- 8:45 - 9:00
    Course Time: Day 1 & 2 - 9:00 - 4:30
    This two-day course provides union officers (Chairs, Vice-Chairs, Secretaries, Treasurers, Secretary-Treasurers, Chief Stewards, Local Council Representatives, Alternate Local Council Representatives, Provincial Executive Members and Alternate Provincial Executive Members) with information on AUPE’s structure, roles and responsibilities of union officers, effective meetings, rules of order, and speaking in a union context. The course ends with a mock meeting to provide an opportunity to apply some of the knowledge gained in the course.
    Course Requirement(s)

    *Must be elected to the position of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Council rep., Alternate Council rep., Chief Union Steward of Chapters and/or Locals, Provincial Executive, and alternate Provincial Executive.

    Introduction to Health and Safety
    Registration: 8:45– 9:00
    Course Time: 9:00 – 4:30
    This one-day introductory course, which reviews legislation, information on WCB, and provides a general overview of what a health and safety program should cover and guidelines for the construction of a Joint Health and Safety Committee.
    This course is open to members who have not taken any previous Health and Safety Courses.
