CALGARY - Alberta Union of Provincial Employees members who work for Bow Valley College have overwhelmingly ratified a new pay deal that will give them increases ranging from 4.1 per cent to 4.7 per cent in the next year.AUPE members at Bow Valley College ratify 4.1%-4.7% pay increases "This is a fair pay increase that takes into account rates of pay in the education sector throughout Alberta," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. The approximately 135 members of AUPE Local 071/011 are in the final year of a three-year collective agreement that included provisions for "wage-reopener" negotiations in the final year. In a wage reopener, wages are renegotiated in a given year of an agreement but all other provisions of the contract remain unchanged. AUPE Union Representative Ray Domeij, who negotiated the increase, said the deal adds 3.8 per cent plus a cash increase of $200 to each salary step in the contact between AUPE and the Calgary vocational college. "This means that people at the bottom of the pay scale will receive a percentage pay increase of 4.7 per cent, while people at the top of the scale will receive an increase of 4.1 per cent," Domeij said. Members of Local 071/011 are employed in support and administrative jobs for the Calgary College. Their collective agreement expires on June 30, 2003. ATHABASCA - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who work for Athabasca University have overwhelmingly ratified a new two-year collective agreement that gives them a four-per-cent pay increase this year and another four-per-cent increase in 2003.AUPE members at Athabasca University ratify new collective agreement The approximately 250 members of AUPE Local 69 - who work in Athabasca, Edmonton and Calgary - also made other gains. "These negotiations were drawn out and difficult," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. "But they show that working people who stick together and back their union can win contract improvements." The old collective agreement expired on June 30, 2002. The Athabasca University employees' 2002 pay increase is retroactive to that date. Steve Nimchuk, the AUPE Union Representative who negotiated the agreement, said improvements in the contract include: "In the end, we worked out a pretty good deal," said Nimchuk. "Within the Education Sector, it's one of the best collective agreements in the province," Nimchuk said. AUPE represents all support staff at Athabasca University. Voting took place at all three locations, concluding in Athabasca late Monday afternoon. CALGARY - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by the University of Calgary have overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year contract that gives them a four-per-cent pay increase in the first year, four per cent in the second year and four per cent in the third year.AUPE members at U of C ratify three-year collective agreement "This was an excellent agreement, in line with what AUPE has been fighting for and getting at other academic institutions in Alberta," said union President Dan MacLennan. "This round of negotiations with this employer was at times difficult, but the strength and unity shown by these members has paid off in a collective agreement they can be very proud of," MacLennan said. AUPE represents approximately 2,900 support and clerical workers at the Calgary university. In late September, the AUPE bargaining team asked for the assistance of a provincially appointed mediator to help resolve the negotiations, which had hit a roadblock. At that point, the employer's bargaining team requested a resumption of talks, saying they had a new mandate to proceed, said AUPE Union Representative Val Luvaha, who negotiated the agreement. "We met on Oct. 2 and 3 and were able to reach a fair agreement," Luvaha said. Luvaha said the new collective agreement also includes: "The members were very pleased with this agreement, as they deserved to be," Luvaha said. EDMONTON - Support workers at the Living Waters Catholic Regional Division No. 42, members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, have ratified a two-year collective agreement that gives them pay increases of five per cent in the first year and four per cent in the second.Living Waters employees ratify agreement The Catholic school district's board is scheduled to vote on the agreement on Oct. 15. "The solidarity and strength of this group resulted in an agreement with an acceptable wage increase in the face of real resistance by their employer," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. He noted that the agreement was reached after the group held an information picket in Hinton on Sept. 30. The collective agreement was reached after difficult negotiations, said AUPE Union Representative Lynn Gough. The agreement also contains improvements in overtime provisions, hours of work and job classifications that were important to the 123 members of AUPE Local 071/012, Gough said. But she added that the members did not get everything they wanted from this round of negotiations. "We will address outstanding issues in future negotiations." The Living Waters employees work as teaching assistants, library clerks, administrative assistants, custodians and clerical workers in Hinton, Edson, Whitecourt, and Slave Lake. The board's main office is located in Whitecourt. LETHBRIDGE - About 350 members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by Lethbridge Community College have overwhelmingly ratified a new collective agreement.AUPE members at Lethbridge Community College ratify new contract The new three-year contract contains pay increases of four per cent in the first year, four per cent in the second year and a wage-reopener in the third, as well as significant gains in other areas. "The bargaining committee really did well in these negotiations, and gained significant improvements in a number of areas of the contract that are important to the members at LCC," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. AUPE Staff Negotiator Dale Perry said that in addition to the pay increases, the contract contained improvements in shift and weekend differential pay, annual leave and special leave provisions. About 120 members of AUPE Local 071/001 attended meetings Tuesday at which they had a chance to have their questions about the new contract answered. MacLennan also attended that meeting. The ratification vote took place all day Thursday and ballots were counted Thursday evening. "The members were very pleased with this agreement, as the strength of their ratification vote showed," Perry said. A "wage-reopener" clause in an agreement means the union and the employer have agreed to sit down in a specified year of the contract and bargain a pay increase for that year. All other provisions of the collective agreement remain in force. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, bargaining representatives for about 2,800 employees of the University of Calgary will return to the table in hopes of hammering out a new collective agreement. EDMONTON - Negotiations between the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and NorQuest College have taken an unexpected turn for the worse after the employer changed its offer at the last minute.Union contemplates mediation application as NorQuest talks falter "This is a very disappointing turn of events for our members," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. "When we went to the table last week, we had expected to sign a fair agreement that day. "Instead, the employer changed its offer," He said. "AUPE will take the appropriate steps to ensure that our members at NorQuest get the fair collective agreement they deserve." MacLennan noted that "it's troubling to see this employer bucking the trend set by other universities and colleges throughout Alberta and trying to force inferior terms and conditions on our members." AUPE represents more than 200 employees of the Edmonton college. They are members of AUPE Local 71, Chapter 10. AUPE negotiator Jim Petrie said the union is seeking a pay increase of five per cent in the first year of a two-year contract and four per cent in the second, improvements in shift and weekend differential pay, and a guarantee of no change in current employee parking rates. The employer came to the table offering a pay increase of four per cent and three per cent over the same term, and a smaller increase in shift differential pay, Petrie said. In addition, the employer wants to continue terms and conditions that are inferior to those in other AUPE contracts with Alberta universities and colleges. AUPE was willing to accept those non-monetary terms and conditions, but only if the college accepted the union's package on pay, differential pay, parking and benefits. "This turn of events leaves us little choice but to take the next step and apply for mediation," Petrie said. "We will be meeting with members this week and discussing the options they have to get a fair contract," he said. The previous contract expired on June 30. LETHBRIDGE - Alberta Union of Provincial Employees members employed by the University of Lethbridge have overwhelmingly ratified a new collective agreement that gives them wage increases of four per cent in each of the contract's first two years.University of Lethbridge employees ratify contract with pay increases of four per cent a year in 2002 and 2003 "We're pleased that this agreement continues the trend of wage increases of four per cent each year being set in our union's Education Sector throughout the province," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. The three-year contract includes provision for a "wage-reopener" in its third year, said AUPE Membership Services Officer Dale Perry, who negotiated the agreement. In a wage-reopener, the union renegotiates employees' wages in a given years of a contract, but all other provisions of the agreement remain in effect. About 380 members of AUPE Local 053 had the opportunity to vote Tuesday on the tentative agreement reached July 9 in Lethbridge. Perry said the agreement also includes an increase in the employees' shift and weekend differential pay, and improvements to benefits plans, bereavement leave, illness leave, severance pay and contract language on contracting out. "The members were happy with this agreement," said Perry. "In terms of today's economy, it's a fair deal." In addition to the employees of the University of Lethbridge, AUPE represents employees at 15 post-secondary educational facilities in Alberta, including Lethbridge Community College and Medicine Hat College.
