HINTON - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who work at the Yellowhead Emergency Shelter for Women have ratified a new two-year collective agreement.Yellowhead Shelter employees ratify two-year agreement The 13 AUPE members who work at the facility in Hinton ratified the agreement May 20. Their employer, the Yellowhead Emergency Shelter for Women Society, ratified the agreement the same day. The collective agreement gives crisis workers and child care workers employed at the shelter a wage increase of $1.50 per hour in the first year and $1.00 per hour in the second year. That works out to percentage pay increases of 9.26 per cent in the first year and 5.35 per cent in the second year for crisis workers and 9.79 per cent in the first year and 5.6 per cent in the second year for child care workers, said AUPE Staff Negotiator Maria Marrazzo. The agreement also included a long-service bonus of $500 for employees who work more than 12 years at the shelter and retirement savings plan contributions for employees, Marrazzo said. The agreement includes establishment of an education fund that will provide $400 this year for training for each permanent full-time employee, plus pro-rated education contributions for permanent part-time employees, she said. Other changes include improvements in contract language pertaining to seniority, occupational health and safety, workers compensation for casual employees and time off between shifts, Marrazzo said. The agreement takes effect on July 1, 2003. EDMONTON - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who work for a grain-handling subsidiary of multinational Cargill Ltd. and representatives of their employer have both ratified a new collective agreement.AUPE members and Alberta Terminals ratify new collective agreement The 22 grain-handling employees of Alberta Terminals in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge voted to ratify the agreement at their worksites earlier this week. The employer ratified the deal Wednesday. The agreement will give the members of AUPE Local 118/109 pay increases of approximately 14 per cent over the life of the contract, said Staff Negotiator Malcolm McNaughton, who led the union bargaining team. The four-year collective agreement is "significantly above industry standards in the grain handling business," McNaughton said. AUPE was prepared to bargain a four-year agreement because of uncertainty about the future of the grain industry caused by continued drought on the Prairies and low world commodity prices, he added. "It took us some time to get this agreement, but in the end the effort was worth it," McNaughton said. Local 118/109 is AUPE's only private-sector bargaining unit and the union's only unit that comes under federal labour law. AUPE is Alberta's largest union, with approximately 53,000 members. SHERWOOD PARK - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by the County of Strathcona have ratified a new three-year collective agreement that gives them pay increases of 3.5 per cent in the first year, four per cent in the second year and a wage re-opener in the third year.County of Strathcona employees ratify three-year collective agreement "This is a good agreement that also contains market adjustments which will give about a third of these employees pay increases above the base percentage raises in the contract," said AUPE President Dan MacLennan The members of AUPE Local 118/009 ratified the agreement Thursday night in voting in Sherwood Park on Edmonton's eastern border. AUPE Union Representative Maria Marrazzo, who negotiated the agreement, said the County of Strathcona employees were pleased by the improvements to their contract included in the settlement. "This was already a good contract and this deal makes it better." Marrazzo said the agreement also includes an increase in weekend and night shift differential pay to $1 from 75 cents and an improvement in the mechanics' tool allowance to $350 from $300. In addition, she said, the agreement includes improvements to overtime pay provisions and to contract language dealing with compassionate leave. AUPE represents about 100 municipal outdoor workers, mechanics, electricians, sanitation employees and others employed by the county in Sherwood Park and surrounding areas. A wage re-opener is a provision that allows wages to be renegotiated in the third year of the collective agreement while all other contract provisions remain in effect.
