NorQuest contract will give AUPE members eight per cent over two years

EDMONTON - AUPE members employed by NorQuest College have ratified a new collective agreement that gives them pay increases of 8 per cent over two years.

The two-year agreement with the Edmonton vocational college, will give members of AUPE Local 071/010 a pay increase of four per cent in the first year, and further increases adding up to four per cent in the second year.

In addition, the contract provides increases in shift differential to $1 per hour from 75 cents per hour.

AUPE represents approximately 220 employees at NorQuest College. Members voted Wednesday evening to ratify the new collective agreement.

City of Spruce Grove employees vote to strike if necessary

SPRUCE GROVE - Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees employed by the city of Spruce Grove have voted overwhelmingly to strike if necessary to get a fair contract.

The Spruce Grove employees, members of AUPE Local 118/001 who work in public works and at the community's arena, took the vote Tuesday evening after months of negotiations had failed to result in a collective agreement.

No strike date has been set by the union. AUPE is working to schedule dates for more talks with the employer.

"AUPE is prepared to put the necessary resources into ensuring that this group of working people are treated fairly," said union President Dan MacLennan.

"A strike is a last resort, but if that is what it takes to get a fair deal, AUPE will stand behind these members in Spruce Grove," he said. "But our prime goal remains to sit down and talk to reach a fair deal."

Representatives of the employer and the local's Bargaining Committee remain apart on salary and the term of the agreement, said Union Representative Steve Nimchuk, one of AUPE's staff negotiators.

Local 118/001 members are seeking a two-year agreement with wage increases of five per cent in the first year and four per cent in the second, Nimchuk said.

"This will bring them closer to the market rate for people doing this kind of work," he said.

The employer is offering salary increases of three per cent in the first year, three per cent in the second year and three per cent in the third year of a three-year contract.

Nimchuk said the employer also refuses to recognize that employees are being asked to perform more complex duties than in the past without appropriate salary compensation.

In addition, he said, the employer also refuses to recognize that employees are being paid more to do the same work by such nearby employers as the City of St. Albert and the County of Strathcona.

AUPE Legal Aid staff in Calgary and Edmonton ratify agreement

EDMONTON - AUPE members employed by the Legal Aid Society of Alberta in Calgary and Edmonton have ratified a new collective agreement that gives them a four-per-cent wage increase this year, another four-per-cent increase next year and other improvements.

"This agreement demonstrates again that small groups of employees can benefit significantly from membership in a union," said Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Dan MacLennan.

The society employs 29 AUPE members in Edmonton and 21 in Calgary. The Calgary group ratified the two-year collective agreement by an overwhelming vote on Monday, the Edmonton group again overwhelmingly on Tuesday.

"The members were extremely pleased with this agreement," said AUPE Union Representative Jeff Ryder, who negotiated the contract.

In addition to the pay increases of four per cent this year and four per cent next year, the agreement includes provisions for an increase to the employees' retirement savings plan, plus improvements in vacation entitlements and hours of work.

The collective agreement also includes provisions for the creation of a joint union-employer committee to deal with worksite issues, Ryder said.
