About the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)

Why Join?

A union contract is the best protection a working person can have.

With a union, your wages, benefits and working conditions are negotiated - they can't be snatched away on a whim. Union contracts require employers to show "just cause" for firing an employee. Employees who are improperly fired can get their jobs back.
Working people need unions

Statistics Canada figures show that union members in Canada are consistently better paid, and given better benefits, than non-union employees.

AUPE offers good collective agreements

AUPE has a proved track record of negotiating some of the best union contracts in the province. We have a history of getting those contracts in a timely fashion.
We represent employees from regional offices located all over Alberta. Our headquarters, with its large staff of labour relations experts and other specialists, is in Edmonton.

AUPE is a democratic union - our membership makes the key decisions that affect your union contract.
AUPE's union dues are lower than those of most other unions. AUPE members pay only 1.25 per cent of base salary only for our union's excellent representation. Unlike most unions, AUPE members do not have to pay dues on overtime pay or shift differential pay.
As an AUPE member, all of your union dues remain in Alberta.

The law is on your side

When you want to join AUPE, Alberta's labour laws protect you.
The Alberta Labour Code and the Alberta Labour Relations Board (the government agency that administers the Code) protect your right to join a union and take part in union activities.
The Alberta Labour Code says: "An employee has the right … to be a member of a trade union and to participate in its lawful activities…" (Section 149, Alberta Labour Code)
This means you have the right to join a union to give you a voice in your workplace, to improve your wages and working conditions, and to build a better life for yourself and your family.

The law protects you

Under the law, employers are prohibited from interfering with a union's organizing campaign. The law prohibits employers or other unions from intimidating or harassing employees to discourage them from joining a union.
The law also forbids employers to demote, punish or discriminate against employees because they have joined a union. (Section 164, Alberta Labour Code )
The Alberta Labour Relations Board has the job of enforcing your rights under the Code. The Board has the power to correct wrongdoing by your employer during an organizing campaign. The Board can investigate complaints, hold hearings and impose penalties and remedies.
If the Board finds that your rights have been violated, it can order your employer to change the way it operates, and it can reinstate a worker who has been improperly dismissed and order the employer to pay lost wages and benefits. (Section 16, Alberta Labour Code )
