AUPE’s Education Sector
AUPE Education Sector members committed to adequate funding for post-secondary education

EDMONTON — Alberta’s post-secondary education system is in crisis — and things must change for the crisis to be solved.

Post-secondary educational institutions throughout Alberta are struggling with the effects of inadequate government funding.

Employees of these institutions — more than 7,000 of them members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees — play a vital role in the delivery of post-secondary education in our province.

But government-imposed constraints are contributing to deteriorating working conditions — which, in turn, are leading to reduced services for students. Downsizing, contracting out, under-staffing, increased workload and burnout are all taking a toll on support staff.

Administrators, teachers and support staff must all deal with the political and financial constraints that are fundamentally restricting the development of programs, their delivery and accessibility.

In short, the accumulating effects of declining government funding are eroding the quality of post-secondary education in Alberta.

AUPE’s Education Sector Co-ordinating Committee — a proactive response

AUPE’s Education Sector Co-ordination Committee — with representation from all 15 AUPE post-secondary education locals — was established to work toward positive change.

The committee believes public education, including post-0secondary education, is a basic human right in a democratic society. We believe public education is an investment, not an expense. We care about quality and affordable access for all Albertans.

As a result, the AUPE Education Sector Co-ordinating Committee is working on several fronts to achieve the goal of fair, properly funded public post-secondary education. These include:

  • Direct lobbying of government, including making a presentation to the provincial government’s Standing Policy Committee on Learning and Employment and face-to-face contact with MLAs.

  • Forming partnerships and coalitions with other organizations, groups and individuals in an effort to influence public opinion and consequently government.

  • Organizing AUPE’s annual Education Sector Conference, which is open to all interested parties.

  • Developing and delivering a public relations campaign communicating the value of public education.
